Academics
Julia Finstad is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey as she graduates from Glenlyon Norfolk School and sets her sights on McMaster University for her post-secondary education.

Julia Finstad is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey as she graduates from GNS and sets her sights on McMaster University for her post-secondary education.

Reflecting on her time at GNS, Julia shared her appreciation for the challenging IB program. “I didn’t really know much about IB before coming here, but I really enjoyed my lit class from Grade 11 to 12,” she said. “It’s just been really good with the conversations and connecting with the teacher and my classmates.”

Julia expressed gratitude for how IB has equipped her for advanced learning. “I really think that IB has prepared me in terms of content and higher education.”

Beyond academics, Julia has been involved in various co-curricular activities and leadership roles at GNS. She served on the Gryphon Government Student Council and the Prefect Council in Grade 12, where she played a pivotal role in planning events and activities for the school community. She was also an active member of the Round Square committee, participating in volunteer work and fundraising initiatives for different charities.

Athletics also played a significant role in Julia’s high school experience, as she was a member of the track and field team from Grade 10 to 12.

Reflecting on her leadership opportunities, Julia credited GNS for creating the leader she is today. “GNS has definitely shaped me into the leader I am because of my ability to be a part of different student councils and student leadership groups. I’ve really enjoyed taking on that leadership position and role that I can help and lead others towards as well.”

Offering advice to current and future students, Julia encouraged them to explore different opportunities and be proactive in getting involved. She described her time at GNS as challenging and busy, yet enjoyable and fun.

“Don’t be afraid to try different things and be a part of different clubs,” she advised. “As long as you attempt or put yourself out there, you can always meet new people and explore different opportunities that you might not normally go down.”

With her deep interest in both business and sports, she envisions herself as the future owner or manager of a company, blending her passions for both fields into a single enterprise.

As Julia prepares for her university career at McMaster’s, she leaves behind a legacy of leadership, academic excellence and community engagement at GNS, inspiring her peers to pursue their passions and take opportunities to lead wherever possible.
