Why Every Student Should Participate in Model UN

As you’re probably aware, there’s a significant amount happening around the world right now. We stand at a crossroads, facing unprecedented challenges—conflict, inequality, climate change, and more. These issues don’t stop at borders; they affect everyone, and they demand collective responses. The current state of global conflicts is alarming. From the crisis in the Middle East (Gaza) to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and countless other conflicts around the globe, the human cost is staggering. We’re witnessing the highest number of conflicts in decades, with so many lives and communities impacted.

Yet, despite this, there is still hope. Why? Because we have the power to shape what international cooperation really means, and Model United Nations (MUN) is one way students can start to understand and contribute to this global dialogue.

More Than Just Debate: A Chance to Grow

So, what does MUN mean to you? It might be hard to answer right away, but it’s something worth reflecting on throughout your time in MUN. For me, it isn’t just about debating with random delegates I’ve just met. Instead, it’s a chance to learn how to work with others and see things from different points of view.

I’ve grown so much through these experiences—whether it was nervously raising my placard for the first time in grade 7, getting caught up in my first chaotic crisis, or having the honour to run a conference with an amazing team of students for the second year in a row. It’s been a place where I’ve connected with people who share my passions, and where I’ve made so many great memories and friends over the years.

A Transformative Experience

As I prepare to graduate this year, I can see how MUN has taken on even more meaning for me. It’s been a huge part of my journey as a student, teaching me how to think critically, work with others, and most importantly, be a leader. Moving forward, I am confident that these experiences will stay with me, changing how I approach the world and the difference I hope to make. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that MUN has given me and many others.

Why Every Student Should Give MUN a Try

So, why should every student consider participating in MUN? Because it’s so much more than just an academic exercise. It’s a chance to see the world through new eyes, to understand different perspectives, and to learn how to collaborate on a global scale. MUN encourages students to engage with critical global issues, build confidence, and make meaningful connections. Most importantly, it creates a sense of responsibility to contribute positively to the world around us.

So, if you decide to take my word and participate; whether you’re excited, full of energy, or maybe a little nervous, remember to make the most of it. It’s these moments of teamwork, fun, and shared experiences that truly make MUN special. And who knows? You might just find yourself learning, growing, and making connections that will stick with you for years to come.
