Grade 11 student Kevin Su recently had the exciting opportunity to represent Canada at the World Youth Go Championship in Romania, where he achieved an impressive 12th-place finish.

The championship brought together some of the most talented young players from around the globe. Go is a board game originating from China, where two players compete to control territory by strategically placing black and white stones on a grid. The goal is to surround more territory than your opponent while avoiding capture.

Go remains a niche sport in Canada and is a game that requires profound strategic thinking. Kevin began his Go journey when he was about six years old and has consistently dedicated about four hours a week to practice outside of school. This year marks his tenth year of commitment to the game.

In Romania, Kevin faced off against some of the best youth players in the world, achieving an impressive 12th-place world ranking. This performance aligns with his current skill level, given that Go is most competitive in countries like China, Japan and Korea.

For Kevin, Go is more than just a game—it’s a way to connect with different cultures and people. His time in Romania was not just about competition, it was also about building friendships with other players and experiencing the local culture. “I got to meet players from all over the world and explore a beautiful country while doing something I really enjoy, and I want to try to bring it to GNS.”

In fact, Kevin’s mother encouraged him to start a club right here at GNS, so that more students can experience the joy of Go. “Kevin has told me that he’s already discussed this idea with his teachers and is steadily working towards making it happen,” she said.

Kevin’s vision for a Go club at GNS has already gained traction, and he is working to bring the initiative to life. His mother remains optimistic, believing that with the support of the school community, the club will succeed, allowing more students to discover and enjoy this ancient game.

As Kevin continues in the world of Go, the GNS community celebrates his achievements and looks forward to seeing where his passion for the game will take him next. His participation in the World Youth Go Championship and his drive to create a Go club at GNS are an inspiration to other students, proving that with dedication and hard work, rare and interesting opportunities can arise.
